Pretoria - The Department of Transport is set to win the war against the
issuing of fraudulently driving licenses.
The Department of Transport (DoT) and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU)
are very vigilant on investigating the issuing of drivers' licenses in relation
to the migration from the Identity Document (ID) based to card licenses to
ensure a credible system. The DoT views the issuing of fraudulently obtained
drivers' licenses in a very serious light.
Out of the eight million licenses issued in South Africa a small fraction is
being investigated for the possibility of fraudulent practices by the DoT and
the SIU. A number of prosecutions and arrests have been done and most areas
that have been identified as containing elements of fraud are being
investigated.
As part of rooting out corruption in the system, the SIU will continue to
investigate challenges regarding:
* irregular issuing of driving licenses;
* conversion of forged driving licenses, including foreign licenses;
* registration of stolen vehicles on National Traffic Information System
(NATIS);
* control and management of Driving Licenses Testing Centres.
The DoT and the SIU will jointly continue with intensive investigations
throughout the country to make sure that a clean system is maintained in the
issuing and conversion of driving licenses.
