Tourism sector development strategy released for the public
comment

8 February 2006

The Department of Trade and Industry has released its approved draft tourism
sector development strategy for public comment.

The strategy was developed to increase competitiveness, and promote exports,
investment, employment and equity in the sector. It also provides a platform to
translate key strategic challenges and opportunities in the sector into
appropriate interventions, goals and implementation programmes.

By the same token, it provides a framework for industry players to develop
and align their own competitiveness strategies, while giving existing and
potential investors in the sector some certainty about government's strategic
direction.

The Department stressed that it was a living document designed dealing with
key challenges in the industry. These need to be addressed regularly and
continuously by all stakeholders for the sector to realise its strategic
intent. Although the department will lead the implementation of the strategy,
it should be guided and implemented by all role-players.

As part of this process, the dti would like to obtain comment from the
public on the approved Tourism Sector Development Strategy draft document. It
is available on the dti website, http://www.thedti.gov.za or as a hard copy from
the dti Campus, Entirweni (Block B), 77 Meintjies Street, Sunnyside,
Pretoria.

The closing date for public comment is 28 February 2006. Comment should be
forwarded to the dti, (CSP Tourism), Private Bag X84, PRETORIA, 0001 or faxed
