The government of the Republic of South Africa and the African Union will be
co-hosting an extraordinary session of the Conference of African Ministers of
Industry in Johannesburg from 24 to 27 September 2007. The main objective of
the conference is to consolidate and prepare for the African Union Summit to be
held in 2008 in South Africa.
During the session the industrialisation of Africa will be under the
spotlight and it is expected that a declaration on a medium term strategy for
industrialisation will be one of the primary outcomes of the session. The
session will also consider a dynamic action plan in this regard. At the core is
the diversification of African economies from natural resources to manufactured
products. As part of the discussions the session will also look into energy
production for industrial development in Africa as well as the transfer and
promotion technology in this regard.
The session will be organised around the utilisation of raw materials,
energy security, production in production capacity and the improvement of
industrial competitiveness on the African continent. The Minister of Trade and
industry, Mr Mandisi Mpahlwa, will present South Africa's National Industrial
Policy Framework (NIPF) to his African counterparts. The country has made
significant progress in developing productive capacity for the industrial
