With reference to the recent reports in the media about a plan for the
textiles and clothing sector, the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti)
would like to state that discussions are currently being conducted between key
stakeholders in business (manufacturing and retail), labour and government.
These discussions are at an advanced stage but have not yet been finalised. As
a result, any comments regarding the content, the impact on employment and the
financial resources involved are pure conjecture at this stage. Once agreement
has been achieved between the stakeholders, the final agreement will be made
publicly available. It is anticipated that this will occur before the end of
this year (2006).
In the light of the above, the dti is not in a position to respond to
specific questions relating to the discussions currently taking place.
