The Eastern Cape Province to hold a provincial moral
regeneration summit at Mngqesha Great Place

20 June 2006

The Eastern Cape Province will on 22 to 23 June 2006 hold a provincial moral
regeneration summit at Mngqesha Great Place in King Williamstown. This
initiative came as a result of a moral summit that was held in Johannesburg in
1998 that gave birth to the programme of Moral Regeneration Movement.

As a leader in championing social development, this responsibility was
entrusted to MEC T Xasa to spearhead this programme which was launched in the
Eastern Cape in 2003. The programme’s sole purpose has been to ensure proper
co-ordination, facilitation, monitoring and evaluation of implementation of the
Constitution and other national and provincial policies and programmes aimed at
the regeneration and restoration of the moral fibre of society.

“The movement has come about as a result of a moral decay in the society
that has seen a number of criminal, abusive and corrupt activities being
committed by people. As a department, we firmly believe this requires a
collective effort that include business community, individuals, communities,
members of the media, faith based organisations, traditional leadership and
academics from institutions of higher learning and every sector that has vested
interests in the development of this province,” said MEC T Xasa.

The summit’s main objective is to promote the movement, lobby the support
and strengthen relations with all stakeholders. In this regard, a model must be
“Building a caring society, together” developed where there would be a pool of
role models from all these sectors that would be an inspiration to our young
people. This further brings to the fore a major task of winning the hearts,
minds and souls of our people, young and old so that they live this compelling
vision of bringing back nostalgia.

In rebuilding the moral fibre of this province, the department has developed
intergeneration programmes that would be used as a platform for interaction
between young and older persons.
