T Makwetla to address Heritage Day celebration, 24 Sept

Heritage day celebration 2006, AJ Swanepoel Stadium,
Musukaligwa Municipality, Gert Sibande District

15 September 2006

Following the unveiling of the Nkangala District Cenotaph (commemorative
plaque) and the first in the province, during the Human Rights day in Witbank
early this year, the Mpumalanga province will unveil the second Cenotaph in the
Gert Sibande District at Musukalikwa Municipality in Ermelo. All-in-all three
Cenotaphs, one in each of the three districts, should be erected. This event
will be followed by the celebration of Heritage Day at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium
on Sunday, 24 September 2006, where Mpumalanga's cultural diversity will be
displayed.

For the past 12 years, the day has naturally evolved in a fully-fledged
celebration of arts, crafts, language, music and dance, a showcase of
Mpumalanga's rich cultural diversity.

The theme for this year is "Celebrating our Living Heritage" ("What we
live"). "Living Heritage" means the intangible aspects of inherited culture and
may include: Cultural tradition, oral history, performance, ritual, popular
memory, skills and techniques, Indigenous Knowledge System and the holistic
approach to nature, society and social relationships.

The simplified version of the Heritage Research Project manuscript initiated
by Premier Makwetla through Professor Delius, will also be popularised during
this month and on the day of the celebration.

The Premier of Mpumalanga province, the Honourable Thabang Makwetla, will
deliver a message of encouragement to the families of the deceased at the
unveiling of the Cenotaph of heroes and heroines who died during the liberation
struggle and the keynote address at the heritage celebrations.

The MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ms Nomsa Mtsweni, and various
dignitaries will give messages of support to the expected audience gracing the
occasion.

The unveiling of the cenotaph will start at 9 am; so is the celebration that
will include showcasing of indigenous and contemporary music and dance at AJ
Swanepoel Stadium. Everybody is invited.
