Post and Telecommunication Industry (2013): Income from internet services rises by 8,6%

Income

The total income for the post and telecommunications industry in 2013 was R276,3 billion. The largest contributor to the total income was ‘telecommunications’ (R262,2 billion or 95%), with ‘post and associated courier activities’ at R14,2 billion or 5%.

The total sales of goods and services (R266,9 billion) represents an increase of 4,4% per annum over sales of goods and services reported in the corresponding survey of 2010 (R234,5 billion).

Employment

The total number of persons employed in the post and telecommunications industry at the end of June 2013 was 107 000. ‘Telecommunications’ employed the largest number of persons (70 229 or 66%).

Employment in the post and telecommunications industry increased by 6,0% per annum compared with the number of employees reported in the corresponding survey of 2010 (89 859).

Casual employees (8 766) recorded the highest increase of 74,4% per annum over the number (1 653) reported in the corresponding survey of 2010. While, permanent employees (82 693) recorded the a decrease of 0,6% per annum over the number (84 248) reported in the corresponding survey of 2010.

The proportion of females out of the total persons employed was 39% compared to 41% reported in the corresponding survey of 2010.

Changes in income from internet

The total income from internet services in telecommunications was R35,1 billion, which represents an increase of 8,6% per annum over income from internet services reported in the corresponding survey of 2010 (R27,3 billion). The largest contributors to income from internet services was ‘data revenue – wireless’ (R19,7 billion or 56,2%) and ‘data revenue – fixed’ (R11,0 billion or 31,3%).

Income from ‘data revenue – wireless’ also recorded the highest increase of 14,2% per annum over the value (R13,2 billion) reported in the corresponding survey of 2010.
