Sport and Recreation on new rugby league jersey

Rugby League visits Minister

17 March 2009

South African Rugby League delegates presented the Minister of Sport and
Recreation, Reverend, Makhenkesi Stofile with the first Rugby League Jersey
displaying the King Protea, as well as a copy of the Rugby League Charter
during a courtesy meeting held at Sport and Recreation South Africa offices in
Pretoria recently.

The jersey sporting the Protea was firstly used by the league side during
the October 2008 Rugby League tour to England.

Commenting after the meeting Deputy President of South African Rugby League,
Jan “Thuso” Prinsloo described the meeting as historical because it marks an
important milestone in a continuous effort of addressing lack of interest by
the media and shortage of sponsorship in Rugby League.

“It has always been a priority for the league’s management to meet with the
Minister to update him of the development, the road thus far and where we want
to take it. We hope that we will work well with the department in keeping the
sport alive in this country,” said Prinsloo.

Rugby League is one of the two national Rugby codes in South Africa.
