Mrs DA Schäfer (Democratic Alliance) to ask the Minister of Police:

(1) Whether his deputy minister or his department purchased a new vehicle on the deputy minister’s appointment to office; if so, (a) why, (b) what make and model is the vehicle, (c) what did the vehicle cost and (d)(i) what accessories were included in excess of the vehicle’s purchase price and (ii) what was the cost of such accessories; if not,

(2) Whether he inherited an existing vehicle; if so, (a) what was the make and model and (b) how old is the vehicle?

Reply:

1 Yes
(a) The deputy minister inherited a Mercedes-Benz E350, 2006 model from the previous deputy minister. The mileage was 150 228 kilometres. In terms of chapter five, section 1.2.5 of the Ministerial Handbook the vehicle exceeded 120 000 kilometres which is prescribed. Hence it was replaced because it was a security risk.
(b) 2009 BMW 740i.
(c) R832 700 (including extras)
(d)(i) BMW 740i, innovations package including items such as rear view camera, ceramic surround for controls, ambient interior lighting, adaptive headlights, high beam assist, lane departure warning and lane change warning.
