How much did Telkom (a) (i) pay and (ii) receive from cellular phone operators for interconnection fees in the past two financial years and (b) at what rate was this payment?

Reply:

I was advised by Telkom as followed:

(a) The amounts paid to and received from cellular phone operators for interconnection fees in the past two financial years is as follows:

Financial year: 2008
Paid to cellular phone operators for interconnection fees: R5,460 million
Interconnection revenue received from cellular phone operators: R838 million

Financial year: 2009
Paid to cellular phone operators for interconnection fees: R5,432 million

Interconnection revenue received from cellular phone operators: R916 million

(b) The following table sets forth Telkom’s fixed to mobile retail tariffs, including their termination rates paid to mobile operators and the retention rates as of 1 January 2007, 1 January 2008 and 1 January 2009. Fixed to mobile tariffs are billed for the first 60 seconds and 30 second increments thereafter. Termination rates paid to mobile operators are paid on a per second basis.
