Question 1222
Dr J C Kloppers-Lourens (DA) to ask the Minister of Basic Education:
Whether her department intends establishing a physical science syllabus more aligned with engineering for learners who are interested in a technical field of study; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
Reply:
No, the department is not aware of any factors that require a change in the physical science curriculum. The subject statement for physical sciences in the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) specifies the standards of knowledge and skills in science to be achieved at each grade. The content is organised around six core knowledge areas which would prepare learners to follow further studies in both the pure and applied sciences, like engineering, medicine, etc. The curriculum provides learners with the opportunity to obtain a good foundation in scientific knowledge, skills and processes that is necessary for further studies in both the pure and applied sciences career pathways.
There is no need to change the curriculum for Physical Science at this stage
