Question no. 94

Mr DA Worth (Democratic Alliance, Free State) to ask the Minister of Basic Education:

(1) Whether there is currently a shortage of (a) schools and (b) classrooms in the Free State; if so, how many (i) schools and (ii) classrooms will have to be built by end of the 2010-11 financial year;
(2) Whether any provision for the necessary schools and classrooms has been made in the budget of the Free State Education Department; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?

Reply:

1. (i) Yes there is a need for new schools in the province; this need is mainly in the newly developed areas. In the 2010/11 financial year the Free State will be building three new schools in these areas and a total of 571 additional classrooms will be provided.

(ii) An allocation of R42,1 million, R6,850 million and R8,410 million is budgeted for new classrooms, mobile classrooms and Early Childhood Development (ECD) classrooms respectively in the 2010/11 financial year. A total of 57 schools will benefit from this programme.
