Thank you for the memorandum. We would have loved to receive you at Sol Plaatje under a different climate. But in spite of the language of protest at your disposal, we are glad to have met you here.
Indeed we're grateful civil society organisations are picking out the issue of education. We want to assure you that we will take a sincere look at what you are asking us to do.
We recognise the fundamental right of all, to equal access of education. We remain committed to transforming and improving our education system. Education is the number one priority of our government.
I am certain, we are united by a common understanding that education holds the key to development and improved quality of life. Despite challenges all around, we will continue playing our part.
In the same breath, we sincerely ask you, as civil society organisations, to do what needs to be done in the best interest of young people, the world over. Help us to create the right climate for positive action. Granted, governments have an obligation to make public education accessible to all.
But, without being defensive, in a situation where our efforts to discharge our responsibilities are scuppered, disingenuously, it becomes extremely difficult to deliver on our mandate.
While waiting for our response to your memorandum, as civil society formations, you should continue to mobilise parents and communities to take responsibility for the education of our children.
You are better placed to help us mobilise learners to take responsibility for their learning. Mobilise academics, higher learning institutions and organised labour to play their role in improving the quality of learning and teaching in our schools. After all, education is a societal issue.
Lastly, rest assured. We've heard your message. It is loud and clear. All we ask of you is time and support. We will duly attend to the content of your memorandum. As they say, "those who drive like lightning will crash like thunder". And so, we won't act recklessly!
