Input by MEC Mosetsanagape Mokomele-Mothibi on the debate on the right to express oneself for children with disabilities at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA

Fellow delegates,

Every child has the inherent birth right to freely express their social, cultural, religious and, in addition, children’s rights and children with disabilities are no different and thus cannot be, at any cost and time, be excluded from those rights of expression.

Like any other citizens of the developed world, children with disabilities must be afforded the rights that empower them to be masters of their own destiny.

We are of the firm belief that this can be achieved through the rigorous implementation of the various pieces of international legislation pertaining to children’s rights as well as our own home countries’ laws.

The South African Bill of Rights enshrines the right of all people in our country and continues to affirm the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom; and chief among those are children with disabilities.

We have continued to respect, protect promote and fulfil the rights of the children with disabilities as contained in the Bill of Rights and there is nothing that will put a stop that noble a cause.

I thank you
