South African Police Service on World Police and Fire Games

Commendation: Participation in World Police and Fire Games, 16
to 25 March 2007, Adelaide, Australia

7 May 2007

In 1985, the World Police and Fire Games Federation (WPGF), a non profit
organisation run by the Californian Police Athletics Federation, established
the World Police and Fire Games (WPFG). These biennial games are open to active
and retired members of the public safety community, police officers, fire
fighters, correctional officers and customs officials. Each host city prepares
high level, international competition events, offering a wide variety of sports
and categories, many of which are comparable to those of the Olympics. The size
and scope of the games continues to grow, with the number of participating
countries steadily increasing and today it is one of the largest sporting
events in the world.

The original concept of the WPFG is based on the principle of fraternity - a
fraternity assembled around common ideals. These common ideals tie the entire
public safety community together and go well beyond borders. The games of 2007
were hosted from 16 March to 25 March 2007 in Adelaide, Australia. A team of
152 active officials headed by Deputy National Commissioners Mala Singh and
Magda Stander and the team manager, Provincial Commissioner N C Sengani from
Limpopo represented the South African Police Service (SAPS). The SAPS team
participated in the following games:

* bore rifle (full bore)
* cross country running
* cycling (mountain bike and street bike)
* darts
* half marathon
* golf
* karate
* lawn bowling
* police action pistol
* police pistol combat
* rugby (7-a-side)
* soccer
* squash
* tennis
* toughest competitor alive
* track and field
* tug-o-War
* volleyball (indoor and beach)

The team won a total of 202 individual medals. The medals comprised of 79
Gold medals, 61 Silver medals and 62 Bronze medals. In recognition of the teams
outstanding accomplishments the National Commissioner, Commissioner Jackie
Selebi, awarded National Police Colours to the entire delegation. "You were
true ambassadors of our country and I have every reason to be proud of you,
South Africa has every reason to proud of you," said Commissioner Selebi.
