Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Magda Stander, Pretoria
29 November 2007
The South African Police Service (SAPS) Women's Network was launched in
October 2003 and subsequent to that every province and division in the SAPS had
to launch its Women's Network Forum.
One of the key objectives of the Women's Network Forum is to make a
provision for a proactive and reactive support base to women with regards to
contact crimes that include murder, rape, domestic violence, all sexual
offences and other related crimes.
Due to sterling work the SAPS Women's Network Forum has been doing within
communities countrywide, SAPS management deemed it necessary to recognise women
who went beyond the call of duty and who extended their availability by
mobilising communities with resources to ensure that SAPS fight poverty before
it becomes crime.
The National Prestige Awards including three runners-up from all nine
provinces and head office will be held at Emperor's Palace, Kempton Park to
serve as recognition, motivation and encouragement for more women within the
SAPS to participate in the network's crime fighting projects.
