South African Police Service to host open day, 10 Nov

South African Police Service (SAPS) to host open day

8 November 2006

The South African Police Service is hereby inviting the media to the open
day at SAPS Training Institution Roodeplaat, scheduled for Friday, 10 November
2006.

The aim of the open day is to launch a media campaign that will be running
nationally over the next 12 months. The police want to encourage members of the
public by means of this campaign to donate dogs to the SAPS with a view to
increasing the number of working dogs in the organisation.

The SAPS and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(SPCA) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at this event. The aim is
to set the public's minds at rest about the fate of dogs that are donated, but
that cannot be trained successfully.

The open day will afford those present the opportunity to have a look at the
breeding facilities at the Training Institution Roodeplaat and get a behind the
scenes glimpse of its breeding programme. They will also be able to attend some
fascinating dog demonstrations and displays which will showcase the invaluable
contribution trained dogs are making towards crime prevention and general
investigative operations.
