Mathongwane

South African Police Service mourns death of an experienced and
dedicated

Police officer
14 November 2007

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is in mourning following the passing
on of Assistant Commissioner, Mosimanegape Peter Mathongwane. Commissioner
Mathongwane was the Station Commissioner of Sunnyside Police Station in
Sunnyside, Tshwane. He died on 5 November 2007 after a short illness.

The much-travelled and sought-after police strategist was born on 21 April
1956 in Goedgevonden village near Ventersdorp, North West. He started his
policing career in the SAPS on 13 June 1978.

Commissioner Mathongwane showed commitment and leadership qualities during
the early stages of his career. He was very skilful in terms of negotiations,
strategic thinking, people and time management, just to name but a few. In his
29 years in the SAPS, he was appointed to very strategic operational
positions.

Among others, notable positions he held were: being appointed to a technical
team that compiled an SAPS National Policy Document on Crowd Management
(subsequently appointed as the first Section Head: National Intervention Unit);
appointed as a core member of the National Priority Committee during the
African Union World Summit on Sustainable Development (held in Johannesburg)
and being an Operational Commander during the International Cricket Council
World Cricket Cup in Kenya.

Immediately after the much-awaited public announcement of South Africa's
right to host the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) 2010
Soccer World Cup, Commissioner Mathongwane was appointed the SAPS Head of
Security for that international event. He had earlier travelled to overseas
countries such as Israel, France, Germany, Uganda and Jamaica, attending big
events and concentrating mainly on organisational security.

"My Office would like to, in this difficult time of grief and mourning,
offer its deep-felt condolences to the immediate family and friends of
Assistant Commmissioner Mosimanegape Peter Mathongwane" said Divisional
Commissioner Arno Lamoer.

Commissioner Mathongwane is survived by his wife and four children. May his
soul rest in peace.

A memorial service for the late Assistant Commissioner Mathongwane will be
held on 14 November 2007 at the Church Building, SAPS Training Institute, in
Pretoria West, Tshwane. The service starts at 11h00.

His funeral, with full military honours, will take place this coming
Saturday, 17 November 2007 in Ventersdorp, North West.
