Social Development on appointments to South African Social Security
Agency (Sassa)

New appointments for regional Sassa offices

29 August 2007

In an endeavour to enhance efficiency in the administration and distribution
of social grants by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), Cabinet
has recently ratified the appointment of three experienced regional executive
managers to head the provinces of Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape and Free State.

Sassa was established by an act of parliament in April 2006 with the purpose
of providing efficiency in the administration and distribution of social grants
as well as working closely with law enforcement agencies in uprooting fraud and
corruption within the social security system. The agency is currently
responsible for the distribution of social grants to more than 12 million needy
beneficiaries.

The appointment of Gerald L Roberts (Free State), Sakhumzi Patrick Yawa
(Eastern Cape) and Moffat Makiseng Mogane (Mpumalanga) is a welcome step
towards ensuring that Sassa is well positioned to meet the needs of the poor
sections of our society. The three officials share amongst themselves years of
managerial experience and good academic background necessary for the effective
functioning of Sassa. In welcoming these appointments the CEO of Sassa, Fezile
Makiwane, pointed out that 'Sassa is now ready to improve service delivery to
be an effective poverty fighting machine.'
