empowering leaders
25 May 2006
In our quest to align our Training and Development strategies with trends
and developments in the broader national and international security
environments, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has developed and
implemented a six month, intensive and rigorous result oriented Station
Management Learning Programme (SMLP).
Tonight, 48 station commissioners, from identified priority stations
nationally, will be presented with certificates at a ceremony at the Saint
Georges Hotel in Irene, Pretoria. The date and number of the next intake will
be announced soon.
South African Police Service Division: Training has identified a necessity
to redesign corporate strategies with regard to training management,
organisational learning and human resource development. In addition, the
Division took into consideration the rapid changes taking place in the global
security environment with regard to participative management and the
empowerment of police Station Commissioners with proper management tools to
improve service delivery.
The purpose of the Station Management Learning Programme is primarily to
drastically improve the quality of service delivery by developing and enhancing
the skills and knowledge of station commissioners and, to approach issues from
a client-centred and problem-solving perspective.
This six module programme began in September 2005 and ended in February
2006. It covers critical areas of management, which among others include
Communications, Mentorship Training, Management and Leadership, Operational
Planning and Management. Highly experienced external and internal tutors gave
lectures and imparted their vast knowledge on the above mentioned subjects.
