Signing of historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on police
co-operation

25 April 2006

The South African Government, led by the Ministry for Safety and Security
and the United Arab Emirates Interior Ministry, today signed a historic
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on police co-operation.

Their sphere of co-operation will amongst others include organised crime,
human trafficking, economic crimes, especially money laundering, illegal
trafficking of drugs and firearms.

In order to give effect to the MOU, the two governments are committed to
exchange information relating to crimes which are planned or have been
committed and relating to persons and organizations involved in these
crimes.

According to the Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula, the agreement
is contributing to enhancing and developing the two countries bilateral
relations and to strengthen their capacity for police cooperation with a view
to contribute effectively to combating crime.

“Our mandate involves the prevention, investigation and combating of crime
in order to ensure safety and security of everyone within our borders. In doing
so we need to be aware that our intention is also directed at what happens just
outside our borders and internationally.

“We have a good name as a young democracy and while we are proud of this we
need to be aware always that our good international standing can be and has
been exploited by international criminals who would want to cleanse their dirt
by using our good name,” said Nqakula.
