launches a Comprehensive Anti-Corruption Strategy for Municipalities
18 October 2006
As part of the effort to promote good governance practices and create a
culture that is intolerant of unethical conduct, fraud and corruption in
municipalities, the Department of Provincial and Local Government has developed
the Anti-Corruption Strategy with the aim of stamping out fraud and corruption
in Municipalities. This is in recognition that corruption and unethical conduct
undermine the integrity and public confidence in the system of local
government.
The strategy is mainly being influenced by the lessons learned over the past
two years working with the Project Consolidate Municipalities in selected
provinces, and available intelligence provided by government agencies. The
Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, 2004, The Municipal Systems
Act, 2000 and other legislations applicable to local government also formed the
basis for developing the Local Government Anti-Corruption Strategy.
The Anti-Corruption Strategy will be officially be launched by the Minister
for Provincial and Local Government, Mr Sydney Mufamadi. The event will be
attended by Mayors of Municipalities and other key players in the local
government sector.
