South Africa hosts Africa Forum on Fighting Corruption

21 February 2007

The government of the Republic of South Africa (RSA), the African Union
Commission (AUC) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA)
will be co-hosting the Africa Forum on Fighting Corruption. The Africa Forum on
Fighting Corruption has been scheduled for 28 February 2007 to 2 March 2007 in
Emperor's Palace Gauteng, South Africa.

The fight against corruption is a key element of the African initiatives to
eradicate poverty and to put African countries on a path of sustainable growth
and development. Various anti-corruption initiatives have been undertaken
within regional economic communities or under the auspices of the African
Union, or as initiatives of African development partners and donors or by civil
society. Many of these initiatives are intrinsically linked and underpinned by
broader governance or economic reform programmes and agendas.

It is expected that about 300 participants from all the regions of Africa,
comprising of ministers, parliamentarians, anti-corruption agencies, civil
society, former heads of states and international organisations including
donors will attend the Africa Forum. The main objective of the Forum is to
consolidate African anti-corruption initiatives and prepare a common African
position for the Global Forum V on Fighting Corruption and Safeguarding
Integrity, scheduled for 25 April 2007 in Gauteng.
