On Friday, 27 March 2009, the Department of Provincial and Local Government
launched an ambitious multi-phased integrated developmental project which will
bring various spheres of government together at the Ingquza Hill Local
Municipality in Flagstaff, in the Eastern Cape.
The event marked the launch of the initiative, the Pondoland Revival
Project, which is aimed at bringing an integrated development package to the
Pondoland region of the Eastern Cape by maximising on the abundant social,
natural and rich heritage potential of the area. The objective of the
initiative is to co-ordinate government's developmental packages from various
departments and working with the community to facilitate their delivery and
implementation.
Minister for Provincial and Local Government, Sicelo Shiceka, is championing
the initiative in partnership with the Ingquza Local Municipality and key local
stakeholders to bring social and economic development to this part of the
country, which has some of the highest levels of poverty and deprivation
alongside the most scenic natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage.
One of the first key projects to anchor this initiative is a R20 million
Electrification Project which is the brainchild of the Department of Minerals
and Energy. A sod-turning ceremony with the Executive Mayor of Ingquza Hill
