Police Service on launch of minimum physical security standards

Launch – minimum physical security standards

17 April 2009

Today the Government Sector Security Council (GSSC) took the pleasure of
launching a directive which clearly outlines the minimum physical security
standards (MPSS) required primarily for national key points, parastatals,
government departments and different types of installations. It is seen as a
critical step in dealing with crime especially property related crime.

In 2000 the South African Police Service (SAPS) Protection and Security
Service was mandated by Cabinet to regulate physical security at various
installations. The establishment of the GSSC was officially launched and
mandated by the National Police Commissioner in 2007 and the directive amongst
others is one of their products they are proud of.

Now security managers will be properly guided when implementing and
reviewing their physical security in their respective departments and
institutions. All organisational resources, i.e, people, assets and physical
protection of information are covered by the MPSS.

The MPSS are absolutely necessary and they also serve as a starting point
toward regulations which will be enforceable and binding. The use of these
standards now will ensure that institutions will be pro-active in securing
their buildings, information and people.

The Divisional Commissioner, Commissioner Sean Tshabalala thanked the GSSC
for their long and hard work in putting together this directive. "The MPSS are
the corner stones of our security and when implemented, they will represent a
solid first line of defence for the installations and the ultimately the
Republic of South Africa", said Tshabalala.

These standards will be reviewed every five years to ensure that they remain
consistent with our security measures and current demands.
