(1) (a) What is her department's policy on mother tongue education and (b) why has it not been included in her department's 2014 plan of action;
(2) Whether she will consider the inclusion of mother tongue education as apriority in this plan of action; if not, why not; if so, (a) how will this bedone and (b) when?

Reply:

1. (a) The department supports mother tongue education in the foundation phase and the intermediate phase. This is a policy position, which is being reinforced through the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) transformation process that has been introduced.

(b) In view of above, it was not necessary to include it in action plan to 2014. Action plan 2014 covers a wider range of initiative than curriculum only.

2. As indicated in 1 above, the department will continue to support the expansion of mother education in public schools.
