Parliament on bus subsidies

Bus subsidy crisis threatens jobs, union tells Members of
Parliament (MPs)

27 January 2009

The bus subsidy crisis is likely to cost about 26 000 employees their jobs
and badly affect one-and-a-half million commuters, Parliament's Portfolio
Committee on Transport heard from the South African Transport and Allied
Workers Union today, Tuesday.

Since November 2008 no subsidies have been paid to bus operators, said the
union.

The committee said it would invite the National Treasury and the Department
of Transport to give their side of the story. In the meantime, the committee
has called on the government to ensure that at least contingency funding from
the Department of Transport and Treasury is made available before the end of
the month.
