Ladies and gentlemen

The footprints of those who have selflessly devoted their entire life to
servicing the citizens of our country are still indelible in the sands of time.
These are men and women who have paid with their lives to ensure safety and
security in our households in our towns and in our cities around the clock.

We are gathered here today during the National Police Day to express our
heartfelt appreciation and to express our profound thanks for the sterling
performance of some members of the police service have toiled to maintain law
and order in our province. Without the meaningful contribution of these men and
women our province and particularly our country would not be safe at any time
of the day.

Equally important I want to compliment our law enforcement officers for the
sterling job they have done during the festive season. Many people who have
been on the wrong side of the law, have brought to book, resulting in scores of
arrests, the seizure of illegal weapons and the fatal wounding of suspects who
dared to fight against law enforcement officials.
This clearly shows that we are not a lawless and chaotic society, but on the
contrary living according to the precepts of the law.

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) have registered great
successes in the fight against serious and violent crimes since last year to
date. We have maximised these efforts with the assistance of our partners
against crime in the province. To be precise members of the SAPS has been
working in close co-operation with a number of partners, including other law
enforcement agencies, security companies, businesses and non-governmental
organisations.

As we celebrate the National Police Day we are also calling to members of
the public to work hand in hand with the SAPS to achieve fruitful results in
our endeavour to fight crime at all costs, this year’s celebration focuses
specifically on promoting partnerships with the communities in fighting against
crime.

Truly speaking members of the public remains the custodian of information
which always leads to the arrest of the suspects. We are not saying our
communities help the robbers in committing crime; in part we are saying the
community itself promote crime if they fail to report the suspects to the
police.

We therefore appeal to you to avail any information they may lead to speedy
arrests of all those who are on the wrong side of the law. This can easily be
done through the use of crime stop which is a painless alternative that an
individual can use to report the case in anonymity. This hotline number has
thus far removed all excuses to remain a victim of intimidation for reporting a
crime.

Do not turn a blind eye on crime. Blow a whistle against crime. You have
nothing to lose.

As we gather here today to reinforce our efforts, criminals are also plan to
undermine our efforts. These criminals have no respect for the law. They do not
have respect for the police and they not have respect for the freedom of the
community. We too, have no respect for them as well. We are ready, armed and
dangerous to the criminals.

Thank you.
