Mec Vilakazi bids farewell to Cuban engineers and welcomes the
Province Housing Advisory Panel

29 August 2006

The North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Phenye
Vilakazi, will bid farewell to the Cuban engineers who have been assisting the
department to implement housing projects in the province for the past four
years. A farewell function will be held this evening from 19h00 at the Protea
Hotel in Mafikeng. At the same function, Vilakazi will also welcome the
Provincial Housing Advisory Panel.

During the implementation of the national housing programme since the
inception of the new housing regime, government was faced with serious capacity
challenges. These challenges were not only about proper interpretation and
understanding of policy, but were also more about lack of technical
expertise.

In order to address this matter, the national Department of Housing
partnered with the Cuban government to avail professionals in various fields.
As a result, two engineers and two architects were deployed across the four
districts. “Their contribution was indeed immense and very profound as
demonstrated by the unblocking of housing projects. Our housing delivery has
also improved both in terms of in terms of quality and expenditure,” says
Mandla Mathebula.
