launches National Information Society Learnership (NISL) Early Warning Systems
and Disaster Management Steering Committee
21 July 2006
The Director-General of the Department of Science and Technology, Dr Phil
Mjwara, will give the keynote address at the launch of the National Information
Society Learnership Early Warning Systems and Disaster Management Steering
Committee at the Department of Science and Technology's (DST) new campus, in
Pretoria on 25 July 2006, commencing at 09h00.
The role of the Steering Committee (SC) is primarily to track progress and
guide further development of the NISL Early Warning Systems and Disaster
Management, which was launched at the University of Free State in February
2006.
The purpose of the committee is:
* to approve and certify minutes of previous Steering Committee
meetings
* to review progress on the project and ensure regular reporting to progress
monitors appointed by DST
* to consider and confirm, where and when applicable the inclusion of an
additional member
* to make recommendations regarding the future of the project
* to appoint separate committees on the project on an 'ad hoc' basis, if
necessary
* to give full and proper effect to achieving the objectives of the
project.
The Disaster Management qualification is in support of government's Joint
Initiative for Priority Skills Acquisition (JIPSA) and Accelerated and Shared
Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA) to try and close the gap of
suitably skilled labour. It is also in line with the disaster management skill
demand gap that has been identified by municipalities.
The launch will also be attended by the national Department of Provincial
and Local Government, Department of Agriculture, Department of Water Affairs
and Forestry, University of the Free State (UFS) and students doing Masters
degree with UFS.
The SC will be chaired by DST.
