The motoring public is hereby informed that a section of the
Rustenburg-Koster Road (R52) will be partially closed for traffic from Monday,
14 May, 2007 until early next year for rehabilitation.
The rehabilitation work on the 34 kilometre stretch which links Rustenburg
and Koster is estimated to cost the Department approximately R40 million and is
expected to be completed by the end of January 2008.
The section of the road affected by the closure is from the T-junction where
the Koster-Rustenburg road (R52) joins the N4 outside Rustenburg. The road
closure will therefore affect all traffic frequently using the same route from
Rustenburg to Lichtenburg including Mafikeng for at least eight months starting
from Monday next week.
The move to close the road is to enable the contractor - Sebapo
Investment/Big Eye (JV) Contractors - full access to the site and for the
rehabilitation work to proceed with minimum disruptions.
While access will still be allowed to traffic, especially to the farming
communities who have no alternative routes use, it is highly recommended that
other motorists should avoid using the Rustenburg-Koster road.
Well-maintained gravel detours will run parallel to the section of the road
that is due for rehabilitation and visible signage will put up at strategic
points. Motorists are warned that the speed limit in the construction zone will
be limited to 40km/h for the duration of the construction work.
"I therefore make an earnest appeal to motorists who choose to make use of
the portion of the road we are rehabilitating, to please be prepared for some
delays, be patient, observe all traffics signs, drive with extreme caution at
all times and adhere to the speed limit," said provincial Transport, Roads and
Community Safety MEC, Jerry Thibedi.
The department recommends alternative routes for motorists travelling from
the direction of Rustenburg via Koster to Lichtenburg and Mafikeng in order to
avoid the road section that will be closed for rehabilitation.
From N4:
* Take the Waterfalls off-ramp and proceed along the R24 road towards
Magaliesburg until at Olifantsnek Dam and turn right into the road leading to
Derby (P20/3) which will leads to Koster.
* Proceed on the N4 from Rustenburg and turn left at the junction before
entering the town of Swartruggens.
