The North West provincial Disaster Management Centre has provided Ngaka
Modiri Molema District Municipality with salvage roof sheets and blankets to
assist residents after roofs to their houses were blown away. This follows
heavy storms that hit nine villages and parts of Mafikeng for the past two
days.
The flood risk that threatened 50 households at Selection Park in
Delareyville has been minimised as Tswaing Local Municipality pumped out some
of the water and channelled it out of the area. The area is a flood area
because of its geographical location.
With the assistance of the police, the municipality has also managed to
secure assets of 15 households whose house roofs were blown away by strong
winds in Atamelang. At Middleton B, a nearby village, 10 mud houses collapsed
and livestock was killed. Most electricity infrastructure in the area has also
been damaged. Six mud houses also collapsed at Broederspit as a result of the
storm rain.
Roof tops to houses at Lokaleng, Tlhabologo, Majemantsho, Makouspan and
Driehoek Villages in the Mafikeng Local Municipality were also blown away.
Minor damage was also reported at the RDP Housing development project at
Extension 39 in Mafikeng.
Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality is busy with the assessment in the
affected areas and simultaneously dispatching resources, that is tents,
blankets and salvage sheets.
In Naledi Local Municipality, roofs to six houses were blown away while five
were blown away in Ramotshiri Moiloa Local Municipality.
Although heavy rains were experienced in both Bojanala Platinum District
Municipality and the Southern District Municipality, no incidents were
reported.
Although no incidents have been reported in Taung (Bophirima District) and
Khuma (Southern District), situations in both areas are being closely monitored
and contingency plans are in place as both areas are vulnerable to flood
disaster risks.
The provincial Disaster Management Centre is thus far satisfied contingency
plans that are in place to deal with emergencies that might arise.
