Two North West women investigated for unlawful possession of state
documents
The North West Department of Social Development has uncovered a scam by a
woman who it is alleged has been stealing clinic cards and selling them for
R50. It is alleged that the woman, who was a volunteer at Khuma Clinic stole
stamped clinic cards, which enabled her âcustomersâ to apply for birth
certificates and eventually Child Support Grant (CSG) for non-existent
children.
The Department got a tip-off from a community member on Monday this week.
During investigations, the South African Police Service (SAPS) accompanied by
departmental investigation team discovered that there was another woman
involved and clinic cards, baptismal certificates, shebeen as well as tuckshop
licencing documents were found in her possession. The second suspect alleges
that there are other people involved in these criminal activities and would be
willing to reveal them.
Whilst the case is still been investigated, the first suspect has been
charged with fraud by the Department as she had lied when applying for CSG for
four children, claiming she is staying with. The woman stays only with one
child.
âWe hope that the law will take its course and demonstrate to the public
that this government does not tolerate corruption in any form, let me call on
communities to come forward and report any fraudulent cases they might be aware
of,â said the MEC for Social Development Nikiwe Mangqo.
The department will work together with SAPS to get to the bottom of this
case.
