North West Provincial Legislature commences housing project enquiry

The Portfolio Committee on Developmental Local Government and Housing, led
by Chairperson Mahlakeng is in Rustenburg and Klerksdorp in the North West on a
fact-finding exercise to look into questions asked about construction company
Toro ya Afrika. The committee comprises of honourables Mahlakeng Mahlakeng
Chairperson, Nelson Hantise, Chris Hattingh, Nomvula Hlangwana, Sam Mokaila,
Yvonne Makume, Veronica Kekesi, Louisa Molema and Poppy Mocumi.
The committee is in Rustenburg from 09h00 to 12h00 on Thursday, 31 August
2006, to be briefed by the Mayor of Rustenburg, Mr Matthews Wolmarans.
Thereafter the committee will go on to visit two projects in the Rustenburg
area before proceeding to Klerksdorp. In Klerksdorp at 14h00, the Committee
will again meet with the Mayor of Klerksdorp, Mr China Dodovu prior to visiting
two projects in the Matlosana Municipality.
The aim of this delegation is to find out if, in fact, there is any
substance to the many queries arising from reports regarding Toro ya Afrika and
the alleged irregular awarding of housing projects to this company.
"As the committee it would be amiss of us to put our heads in the sand and
pretend we are not aware of the many questions being raised regarding Toro ya
Afrika. Moreover, some of these questions were raised in the House itself by
members of the Provincial Legislature. So we are here to get a sense of the
projects undertaken by Toro ya Afrika and other construction companies doing
the same work." said Hon Mahlakeng
"Ours is to get an idea of what is happening, call in Toro ya Afrika,
National Home Builders Association and the Department at a later date and then
prepare a report which will be presented in the House for debate. We are not
conducting an exhaustive forensic investigation by any means. If we identify a
need for this, it will come later. Before this process is complete, we cannot
say what will happen or what the Legislature will do," concluded a grim faced
Mahlakeng.
