The North West Department of Developmental Local Government and Housing will
be hosting a workshop aimed at communicating changes brought by the Local
Government Laws Amendment Act (Act No.19 of 2008)The workshop targeted at local
government stakeholders is scheduled for 9h00, tomorrow 27 February 2009 at the
Embassy Hall in Mafikeng.
The Local Government Laws Amendment Bill was passed by the National Assembly
on the 20 August 2008 and was signed into law as an Act by the President
Kgalema Motlanthe on the 13 October 2008.
The Act as signed deals with, among others:
* request by the Minister to the MEC to investigate allegations of
maladministration in a municipalities
* the regulation of disciplinary codes and procedures for municipal managers
and managers reporting directly to the municipal managers
* aligning the re-demarcation of boundaries by the municipal demarcation board
with the municipal financial year
* the regulation of participation of municipal staff members participating in
national, provincial and local government elections
* amendments relating to providing out of pocket expenses for ward committee
members and allocation of funds and resources for ward committees, duties and
powers of ward committees and the term of office of members of ward
committees.
The Act has amended certain provisions of the local government laws so as to
facilitate more effective implementation of Municipal Demarcation Act (Act
No.27 of 1998), Municipal Structures Act (Act 117 of 1998),Municipal Systems
Act (Act No.32 of 2000),Municipal Property Rates Act (Act No.6 of 2004).
