The South African Government yesterday, 23 November, signed a General
Agreement on Development Co-operation with its Canadian counterpart. The
Agreement provides a legal framework for development co-operation and the
implementation of the Country Development Programming Framework (CDPF).
South Africa has demonstrated a strong institutional and political resolve
in tackling critical issues such as inequality and continues to make great
strides in improving access to social services for the poor and vulnerable
despite some challenges.
The agreement outlines the bilateral programme between South Africa and the
Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) which will focus on
strengthening service delivery with regard to issues around HIV and AIDS,
governance and rural development, as well as leveraging South Africa's
knowledge to promote regional co-operation.
Amongst others the bilateral programme seeks to contribute to the
stabilisation and reduction of the incidence and prevalence of HIV and AIDS,
improving access to social and economic services through governance initiatives
and assisting small-scale farmers with technical and organisational services.
CIDA will continue to support South African initiatives that contribute to
regional stability and co-operation.
