The Minister of Education, Ms Naledi Pandor, to visit the
University of Venda

The Minister of Education, Ms Naledi Pandor, will on Friday, 23 November
2007, pay a day-long visit to the University of Venda, Thohoyandou in
Limpopo.

Minister Pandor is visiting the university to check on the progress of the
university's recovery plan and also have meetings with all key
stakeholders.

In April 2006, the Department of Education accepted the University of
Venda's "Recovery Plan" as a basis for ensuring long term viability for the
institution.

The department further acknowledged that the university was to require a
significant financial support to address the backlog in maintenance of physical
infrastructure including student residence and Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) infrastructure in order to facilitate the delivery of quality
teaching service and improvement of the quality of student life.

On the basis of the recovery plan, the Minister of Education, Ms Naledi
Pandor, approved the allocation of R160 million, of which its breakdown is as
follows:

* recapitalisation: R27 million
* infrastructure and ICT recovery plans: R118 million
* teaching and student life: R15 million.
