N Pandor to launch national reading programme, 8 May

Launch of the national reading programme

5 May 2006

Many of our children cannot read, write or count at their appropriate age
level according to systemic surveys in Grade three and six, which were
conducted in 2001 and 2004 by the Department of Education.

A national reading programme will be launched to improve learner performance
in reading. The objectives of the programme are to:

* Raise the national profile and support for reading;
* Increase capacity of teachers to teach reading; and
* Provide sufficient reading resources to support the teaching of reading in
schools.

National Education Minister Naledi Pandor will launch the programme at
Izingolweni Primary School in the Port Shepstone District on Monday, 8 May
2006.

The launch will be attended by several VIPs, including the national Minster
of Arts and Culture Dr Pallo Jordan, KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Ina Cronjé,
Royal Netherlands Ambassador Frans Engering and KwaZulu-Natal
Superintendent-General Dr Cassius Lubisi.

Launch is scheduled as follows
