Technical High School
14 January 2009
Today, Minister Pandor spoke at an event to mark the adoption by Volkswagen
SA of Bokgoni Technical High School in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. Bokgoni High
is a Dinaledi school, a focus school dedicated to teaching mathematics and
science subjects.
Volkswagen SA has adopted Bokgoni School for three years and invested R844
000 in improving school infrastructure. This is part of its R30 million
corporate social investment programme.
Minister Pandor said:
"The challenges that we face require hard work from all. Government cannot
overcome these challenges alone. We need the support of stakeholders and
partners.
"In particular, we want companies to adopt Dinaledi schools, to mobilise
technical support and expertise for the development of mathematics and science.
I'm pleased that Volkswagen SA has decided to support our schools."
The objectives of the Adopt-A-School project are to:
* promote quality teaching and learning
* encourage increased participation and outstanding performance in mathematics
and science
* mobilise resources for schools to support effective teaching and
learning
* co-ordinate private sector support to schools and ensure equitable
distribution and sustainability of assistance.
To date 287 schools (out of 500) have been adopted by different business
institutions, private donors and selected institutions of higher learning.
Minister Pandor drew attention to the contribution of the Dinaledi schools
to the maths passes in the NSC exam 2008:
"You may remember that we set our schools a target of 50 00 learners passing
mathematics at the equivalent of higher grade in 2008.
"We are proud that over 63 000 passed at over 50%. Moreover, our Dinaledi
schools made a valuable contribution to the number of these successful
learners. Dinaledi schools comprise only seven percent of all schools, but
contributed 24% of the 63 000 high-level mathematics passes."
