The Minister of Education, Mrs Naledi Pandor (MP), will today, 6 November
2006, at 18h30, deliver an opening address at the Cradle of Language
Conference, to be held at the Foyer, Endler Hall, Conservatoire, c/o Neething
and Victoria Street, University of Stellenbosch.
The conference is jointly organised by the University of Stellenbosch and
the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) under the theme: âThe
evolutionary emergence of language in Africaâ.
The Cradle of Language Conference is significant in two ways.
Firstly, it will allow a large number of leading scientists from all over
the world, including Africa, to survey, appraise and extend the body of
evidence for the view that human language originated and developed in
Africa.
Secondly, in unravelling the evolution of language, the conference is
expected to make a contribution to clarifying the unique place of the people of
Africa in the prehistory of man.
More than 80 top scientists from all over the world are expected to read
papers at the conference.
