Mokonyane to hand over Mercy Haven Shelter

24 May 2007

Gauteng MEC for Housing Nomvula Mokonyane and representatives of
construction company BPB Gypsum will hand over the renovated Mercy Haven
shelter for the abused in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni on Friday, 25 May 2007.

The renovated shelter is a result of a public-private partnership between
the two stakeholders. The shelter is designed to make life more bearable to
abused women and children.

The department together with the private sector embarked on a process to
renovate shelters for abused women and children in the province during the 16
Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children campaign last year.
Mercy Haven was among the 16 shelters identified as needing urgent
attention.

The department last year also resolved to observe the 16 Days campaign the
whole year as opposed to only 16 days annually between November and
December.

Details of the event are as follows:
Date: Friday, 25 May 2007
Time: 10h00
Venue: Mercy Haven, 41 South Street, Boksburg
