The Arrive Alive campaign in Mpumalanga has set off on a high note
translating into many activities currently taking place, aimed at ensuring
safety on the province's roads.
The campaign was launched last week Saturday, 9 December 2006, at Lochiel. A
day before the launch, 8 December 2006, the department launched the provincial
road safety at Ermelo Civic Theatre.
The launch of the campaign was fully attendant by the entertainment industry
icons which have been selected by the department as Arrive Alive
ambassadors.
They include Ligwalagwala fm breakfast show host Madumane, Donny and the
Heavenly heirs, gospel icons, Rebecca Malope and Mexi K Solly Moholo, were also
invited to be part of the launch to spread the road safety messages.
During the launch, MEC Fish Mahlalela ardently requested provincial road
users to give him one special Christmas present for this festive season.
"I urge you all road users to ensure your safety throughout this festive
season by not getting involved in any road accident. That will be the best
Christmas present you can give me," he said.
He further warned all road users (motorists and those who'll be using roads
for walking purposes) to ensure that they don't get caught up on the wrong side
of the law.
"As one of our festive season slogans which says, 'obey the rules or face
the fire,' this means our traffic officer's will be out on full force to
enforce the law. There will not be there on the roads to negotiate," said
Mahlalela.
The slogan is part of the other two Arrive Alive campaign slogans which are
Sivuth' Umlilo and Cabulela Ekhaya.
Sivuth' Umlilo donates that our traffic officer's are on an uncompromising
mood to road law offenders and Cabulela Ekhaya promotes the better consumption
of alcohol at homes than in public places where one will be forced to use the
roads.
This week on Wednesday, the department and its partners, Ligwalagwala fm and
Ikwekwezi fm, held separate roadshows at Nkomazi and Middelburg toll gates
where Arrive Alive promotional materials were distributed to road users who
were passing by.
On Friday, this week, the partners will be driving the campaign still at the
Middelburg and Machadodorp tollgates.
On Saturday, the department will start its new soccer tournament called
"Cabula Ekhaya." It will take place at Mbuzini grounds. The tournament is aimed
at instilling road safety messages to soccer lovers around the area.
During this festive season, the Department of Roads and Transport is
conducting loads of road blocks throughout the province to inspect and ensure
road laws compliance by motorists.
As from 2 December to 23 December 2006, 178 public transports in the
province were impounded due to their minimal compliance with road laws.
With the campaign, the department aims at instilling road safety messages to
all road users in the province with an aim of realisation of drastically
reduced road carnages this festive season.
