Community members are urged to make full use of government employed
Community Development Workers (CDWs) deployed in all municipalities. The
Mpumalanga Department of Local Government has 412 permanently employed CDWs
currently throughout the province. They are employed to assist communities with
information on how to access government services like grants, identity
documents applications and other development programmes available to improve
their lives.
They also assist communities and help ward councillors distribute
information on council resolutions and development plans for IDPs (Integrated
Development Plans). CDWs explained and encourage communities to participate in
government community and development programmes. Monthly programmes come from
the municipality, what activity the CDW will be doing, the duration of the
activity and areas where they will be working, and the communities are urged to
request these so as they know when the CDWs will visit their area.
The CDWs report directly to their supervisors who are called CDW district
coordinators. They in turn report to provincial coordinators. Surprise visits
are conducted in wards by the supervisors as part of the monitoring process.
During these surprise visits the work of the CDWs is compared to their
programmes for that month. The monthly reports indicate their achievements
according to their monthly programmes. The challenges are dealt with direct
with the concerned institution and solutions are attained at that level.
Reports from the CDWs are then submitted to the CDW National Task Team
Meetings. Communities are encouraged to visit their municipalities to find more
information on their CDWs.
