Mpumalanga Housing on housing demand database for municipalities

Mpumalanga Department of Local Government and Housing assists
municipalities to develop housing demand database

6 November 2007

The Department of Local Government and Housing is assisting municipalities
to create a housing demand database to help the community follow the correct
procedures in applying for government's low cost houses (RDP). The approval of
an application for an RDP house requires that the potential beneficiary
registers with the local municipality and be placed in the municipal housing
waiting list. The waiting list forms the basis for municipalities planning for
housing projects and accessing of funding for housing projects.

When housing projects are approved, potential beneficiaries are identified
from the municipal waiting list. The municipalities then contact the potential
beneficiaries from the waiting list to establish the need for the subsidy
house. The beneficiary must always update their contact details to make it easy
for the municipality to confirm the need of the house. Once the municipality
has identified a project and all necessary requirements to start a project have
been followed, the municipality will approach the beneficiary whose name is in
the waiting list to fill in a subsidy application form.

Further information on the progress of their application will come from the
local municipality. The application forms for a government housing subsidy are
for free. The community must not pay anyone to have their name placed on the
waiting list (demand database) or for the subsequent filling of the subsidy
application forms (when an individual's turn has been reached). The potential
housing beneficiary must consult with their Ward Councillors for more
information.
