On Wednesday, 10 October 2007, a grade 12 learner at Mayibuye High School,
Mbuso Sylvester Khumalo aged 25, allegedly shot and injured a policeman in the
school premises just after the writing of the English first paper grade 12,
Senior Certificate Examination.
The Mpumalanga Department of Education, view this incident seriously and
consider Mbuso Sylvester Khumalo to be dangerous to all role players in the
school.
To this effect the department has dismissed Mbuso Sylvester Khumalo with
immediate effect.
This decision seeks to ensure the safety of all other learners, teachers and
non-teaching personnel of the school.
This decision further sends a clear message to all, that a school is the
centre for community growth and development and as such should be free from the
trafficking of dangerous weapons or other forms of social ills.
Schools are environments where teaching and learning take place and should
not be used as safe havens for the delinquents and criminals.
The department therefore urges all other learners to refrain from carrying
any prohibited substance and / or dangerous objects to school as no learner is
allowed in the school premises carrying such.
In the same breadth a clarion call is made to parents to ensure that their
children do not go to school with any object or substance that may be regarded
as a potential danger.
Once more the department regrets the shooting incident at Mayibuye High
School on Wednesday and would like to take this opportunity to wish Constable
Patrick Fakude a speedy recovery.
