Research has indicated that the world is facing an unprecedented crisis on
issues of global warming and climate change. Such a problem is exacerbated by
the emissions of gases from mines, households and changing weather patterns.
Reducing the greenhouse gases immediately can help to change the status quo. To
this end, the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture and Land Administration is
confronting the problem of global warming head on.
The department will on Thursday, 23 November 2006 recognise schools that are
responding to the problem by raising environmental awareness through the
programme of global warming and climate change (climate change competition).
The outcome of this competition is environmental awareness which will result in
action initiated at all levels that will modify behaviour and foster a sense of
responsibility at all levels of society.
This will ultimately result in the protection and the sustainable use of the
environment, and therefore the Climate Change competition is a very important
mechanism to implement the Decade of Education of Sustainable Development
(DESD) in Mpumalanga.
Aligned to this is the provision of opportunities to learners of science and
technology to, through practical projects, use innovative ideas and methods to
solve problems related to climate change and other environmental problems. The
competition is contributing towards a better life for all, since it encourages
learners of our province to participate and contribute towards the development
of an integrated and multi disciplinary approach to environmental resource
management.
The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism initiated the Climate
Change competition in 2002 to look at air quality issues in a much broader way.
In 2005, Gert Sibande District started this initiative as a strategy to take
air quality issues and other environmentally related issues to the larger
community. This was a great success and delivered the anticipated outcomes.
