education closer to communities"
25 March 2009
The Gauteng MEC for Education, Angie Motshekga, will officially hand over 13
new schools to various communities around Gauteng. This is part of the GDEs
School Building Programme initiated by MEC Motshekga in 2006 to reduce the
shortage of schools and make education more accessible to all citizens of
Gauteng.
Through this initiative the department has ensured that many of the learners
in the province who used to travel long distances have been saved from the
burden of doing so and now enjoy the benefit of having schools around their
communities.
"As the Gauteng Department of Education we made a commitment to respond to
the ever growing demands of the socio-economic needs of the people of Gauteng -
quality of education being one of them. Today we are proud and hopeful that the
13 new schools that we are handing over to our communities will alleviate
overcrowding in some of our schools and that the more than 13 000 beneficiaries
will indeed confirm that the doors of learning and culture shall be opened to
all as espoused in the Freedom Charter," says MEC Motshekga.
