Youth learn about leadership on day three of youth camp

When you have developed self-mastery, you have the ability to control yourself in all situations, and you move forward consciously and steadily towards your goals. You know your purpose, and you have the self-discipline needed to do things in a deliberate, focused, and honourable way.

This was the lesson today for the five hundred (500) youth gathered for the week-long National Youth Camp at the De Brug Military Centre in Bloemfontein, Free State. Lessons on self-mastery form part of leadership training the youth will be exposed to throughout the week in order to make them agents of change who will lead development initiatives in the places they come from.

The Youth Camp is organised by the Department of Social Development with the aim, among others, of providing South Africa with a growing number of vibrant young minds that will contribute towards the development of their communities and the country.

The youth were encouraged to share their dreams for South Africa and discuss how these dreams could be realised through their own efforts as young people. They further learned about goal setting, creating and sustaining a positive mind set, and having the willpower to pursue their goals and dreams relentlessly.

In the afternoon they were taken through their paces by Sports & Recreation South Africa in various sporting codes including volleyball, soccer, tug of war, and netball, among others.

The Youth Camp runs until Friday, 7 December.
