The North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa on Thursday reported that 84 cases of fraud and corruption were investigated against police and traffic officials in the North West province during the past financial year.
MEC Yawa during delivery of his budget speech on Thursday in the Provincial Legislature reported that 61 cases of misconduct were investigated against police.
Fifty-one of the cases relate to allegations of involvement of police in criminal activities while 10 relate to allegations of corruption. Forty four dockets are still under investigation, seventeen police officials were arrested and 14 dismissed in the past financial year.
Seventeen municipal traffic employees across the province, 15 examiners and two cashiers were suspended and 600 roadworthy certificates, 455 drivers licenses and 222 learners licenses which were fraudulently obtained withdrawn in order to protect the integrity of learner driver and driver licensing testing system during the past financial year.
The department has handed some of the cases to the Special investigating Unit and South African police Service Commercial Branch for further investigation.
“This is the year of action against greed and corruption. We will continue to be tough on fraud and corruption. There is no place in the public service for vampires .Your are either clean or dirty, In or out” said Yawa.
Yawa said that his department will intensity its effort to deal with fraud and corruption in order to stamp out greed and corruption within the ranks of the police.
“Re tlile go feela. We are going to clean up," he vowed.
