Yawa on arrest of 86 road users for driving without licenses

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa says that the number of unlicensed road users driving on public roads is unacceptably high therefore his department will be taking measures to stamp out the phenomenon particularly during the festive season. MEC Yawa's comments follow the arrest of 86 unlicensed road users in Delarayville, Ottosdal and Sannieshof over the weekend.

Forty-five (45) motorists were also issued with traffic fine tickets for worn-out tyres, 29 for unlicensed motor vehicles and 20 motorists that included four teachers, three off-duty policemen and a physiotherapist for drunken driving as part of Provincial Public Safety Traffic operations that were conducted within the jurisdiction of Tswaing Local Municipality.

The zero tolerance operation also discontinued the use of 10 motor vehicles which were found to be unroadworthy. The province wide operation is expected to be escalated during the festive season in order to reduce fatalities and road accidents.

Meanwhile, MEC Yawa is scheduled to formally launch the provincial Arrive Alive Campaign at the South African Police Service Airwing Hanger in Potchefstroom on Thursday, 19 November 2009.
